EqualLogic Array Software

Dell EqualLogic Array Software includes the EqualLogic Firmware, EqualLogic Group Manager and EqualLogic Manual Transfer Utility.

EqualLogic Firmware

Dell EqualLogic Firmware is a SAN operating system that’s integrated across the entire family of EqualLogic PS arrays. Unique peer storage architecture helps deliver consistent performance through virtualisation and optimisation of resources across the SAN.

EqualLogic’s latest firmware (release 6.0) offers new features so your hardware can continue to meet your current needs and be ready to grow with you as the demands of the virtual era increase. New features include:

  • Real-time data protection with Synchronous Replication
  • Increased efficiency with Snapshot Space Borrowing, Volume Unmap and Volume Undelete
  • Improved data security, incorporating full-encrypting SED drives and IPSEC

Key Features

Synchronous Replication
Synchronous Replication (SyncRep) maintains two identical copies of a volume across two different storage pools in the same PS Series group for real-time data protection ensuring that a viable, hardware-independent copy of the volume is always available.

Snapshot Space Borrowing
The Snapshot Space Borrowing feature enables you to temporarily increase the available snapshot space for a volume by borrowing from the snapshot reserve of other volumes and pool-free space, preventing additional overhead costs to deal with temporary usage spikes and allowing you to keep your older snapshots from being automatically deleted.

Volume Unmap
Volume Unmap helps recover unused space previously allocated to volumes, offering cost-effective storage capacity utilisation for users running VMware, Microsoft and Linux platforms.

Volume Undelete
Volume Undelete enables you to restore volumes deleted by mistake. Deleted volumes are stored in a volume recovery bin, where they are preserved for up to one week or until free space is required — protecting your data availability.

Support for SED drives and IPsec
Dell EqualLogic Firmware now offers support for for SED (Self-encrypting drives) and IPsec — offering you latest in data security.

Data Center Bridging
Data Center Bridging (DCB) is designed to improve quality of service with consistent and even traffic flow in a converged SAN/LAN networking fabric.

Automatic Load Balancing
EqualLogic load-balancing features automatically balance workloads by seamlessly spreading data across multiple active storage resources, helping maximise performance by intelligently optimising the available network connections, cache, controllers and drives.

Peer Storage Architecture
“Peer” describes the collaboration and equal partnership of a single, simple architecture. Arrays function as peers and work together to share resources including cache, disks, network and I/O (input/output).This cooperation enables the even distribution of workloads, application performance optimisation and comprehensive data protection.

Rapid Provisioning
The intelligence of virtual storage provisioning combined with the modular design of EqualLogic storage arrays enable you to quickly and easily expand storage capacity without affecting data availability. You can start with a single storage array — then, as storage, performance and network requirements grow, add more members to help increase capacity, performance and network bandwidth.

Storage Pools
Storage pooling provides the ability, within a single SAN, to create sub-groups of arrays that enable you to optimally configure and prioritise applications for the required level of service. You can configure separate storage pools within a single SAN to help build an efficient, flexible, easy-to-manage storage environment.

Point-in-Time Replication
EqualLogic point-in-time replication remotely replicates data from one PS group to another over a standard IP network over long distances, helping provide your organisation with high levels of data protection and disaster tolerance.

      • Support for EqualLogic Array Software 6.0 including Synchronous Replication, Snapshot Space Borrowing, Volume Undelete and Volume Unmap

SAN HQ helps IT managers enjoy a well-tuned EqualLogic storage area network (SAN) to meet and surpass their business SLAs:

      • Improve performance by identifying performance bottlenecks
      • Effectively allocate group resources by identifying underutilised resources
      • Improve availability by proactively identifying problems
      • Plan for future by identifying requirements for storage growth

SAN HQ not only ensures that IT managers have the most optimal Dell EqualLogic SAN setup for high-availability and high-performance environments, it is also a powerful tool for planning SAN expansion and for successfully implementing expansion. The value of SAN HQ multiplies in customer environments that grows and flex. Benefits of SAN HQ include:

      • Multigroup Management:SAN HQ enables centralised monitoring of multiple Dell EqualLogic PS Series groups from a single graphical interface. IT managers can see information on all of the monitored groups at a glance and quickly focus on groups with potential issues — monitoring them more closely with detailed reports and analysis. Multisite support provides a single pane of view of Dell EqualLogic groups spread across geographies streamlining monitoring and analysis of EqualLogic groups in remote sites.
      • Comprehensive information about the Dell EqualLogic PS Series arrays: SAN HQ provides comprehensive information on configuration, capacity, I/O (input/output) performance and network performance for Dell EqualLogic PS Series groups, pools, members, disks, volumes and volume collections. IT managers can effectively allocate group resources by better understanding storage capacity usage over time, identify underutilised resources and improve performance by identifying performance bottlenecks and potential performance issues before they occur. These in depth analytical tools, enable flexible, granular views of SAN resources and provide quick notification of hardware, capacity and performance-related problems.
      • Easy-to-use views: SAN HQ presents data in multiple views that is highly intuitive for IT managers to navigate and is suited for the needs of different customers. Normalised view reporting factors out data spikes and helps IT managers access a more realistic look at their normal operation. Live View displays data captured in brief session intervals at quick polling rates — helping IT managers diagnose or analyse a situation quickly. SAN HQ also has a single sign-on capability for launching EqualLogic Group Manager, part of Dell EqualLogic Array Software.
      • Experimental analysis: SAN HQ collects information on current hardware configuration and distribution of reads and writes, and provides information about PS Series group performance, relative to a specific workload. IT managers can perform experimental analysis to determine if a group has reached its full capabilities, or whether they can increase the group workload with no impact on performance. This helps in identifying requirements for storage growth and future planning. IT managers can also plan for optimal Dell EqualLogic SAN performance configuration by using RAID Evaluator and identifying the effect of different RAID policies on the performance levels of the EqualLogic group.
      • Events and alerts: SAN HQ provides performance-related email alerts and hardware alarms on multiple parameters. This feature ensures users take timely action to make data more available and more secure. IT Managers can avert potential downtime and have their environment highly available.
      • Formatted reports, graphs and archives: Customisable reports and graphs are available on Performance, Capacity Utilisation and Trending, Group Configuration with Alerts, Replication, Status, Host Connections and more. Reports such as the Group Diagnostics report shows an analysis of the group identifying nonrecommended setups of the arrays. This report helps IT Managers quickly detect potential issues with the group.
      • SAN Assist — Diagnostic data collection and optional transmission to Dell Support: Collection of diagnostic data that can be, at your discretion, automatically transmitted to Dell Support to expedite resolution of issues.
